Pizza Sauce

terpizzasauce.jpg

The most important part of pizza is the sauce.

In my attempt to get a Cooking with Friends Pizza Edition going, I made some dough (which was decent) but I made some sauce, which was better (and much easier) than I expected. Here it is! I hope you love it as much as I do!

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
Makes approximately 3 cups

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

  • 4 garlic cloves

  • 8 tbsp tomato paste (the amount in 1 small can)

  • 1 680ml bottle of crushed tomatoes

  • 1 tbsp fresh basil, chopped

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • 1/2 a small red onion

  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (or as much as you want!)

Method

  1. In a saucepan, heat oil over medium.

  2. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant (about 30 seconds).

  3. Add the tomato paste and cook until the colour changes to a brick red, stirring regularly (2-3 minutes).

  4. Add the crushed tomatoes, basil, oregano and red pepper flakes.

  5. Add the onion as 1 unit (don't chop it up, you will be removing it later).

  6. Simmer for at least 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. You might need to add a little water if it starts to look dry.

  7. When done, remove from heat and remove the onion and proceed to use it on all the pizzas!
